The Kings Gate (Abridged)

Description

The aptly named and starkly brutalist Kingsgate Bridge which spans the river Wear in Durham City. The bridge provides access to the peninsula above what was once the "King's Gate" through the now overgrown defensive walls that surround the Castle and Cathedral. Designed by Ove Arup, it stands next to the similarly brutalist Durham University Student's Union. A style which divides opinion but which captures the architectural mood of a point in time.
