A monument to the mines

The pit cage was erected over the capped South shaft of the former Easington Colliery which once covered most of this site. A monument to those who worked at the mine between 1899 and 1993. Easington was one of the last deep coal mines to close in the County Durham coalfields, marking the end of an era
